Singing Back

A compelling new one woman play by Susan Maeder premieres at the Mendocino Theatre Company with five performances running May 22, 23, 24 and 25.

Susan will perform her original work Singing Back as a Special Production for MTC—an exciting bonus to MTC's regular season calendar. All performances are at 8:00 p.m., with two performances on Sunday, May 25 at 2:00 p.m. and again at 8:00 p.m.

Singing Back is a phrase borrowed from the poet Mary Oliver, who used it to refer to the way the end of a poem hearkens back to its earlier stages. Susan Maeder wrote this play to acknowledge the deep inspiration she got from the diaries of Etty Hillesum, a Dutch woman whose life was itself fully inspired though she died young. Susan's play is funny, honest, intimate, and courageous. For the audience it's a remarkable journey of discovery and testimony to our shared experience.

Susan Maeder has lived in Mendocino since 1981 and is well known for her stellar performances in many dramatic and comedy roles. This is the second solo presentation of her own material to be staged here on the coast. Black Tulips was produced in 1994 in Fort Bragg and again in 1996 in Mendocino. Current residents will recall her amazing work in the hit play Wit.

The current production is directed by Ayn Ruymen, lights designed by Lee Edmundson and sound by David Woolis. This play is deeply affecting, and will have you laughing and crying in recognition of our common human spirit. "It will take you to some unexpected places," Susan tells us. And it does.
